Battery donation as part of JYSK's environmental program

There is a small but very important thing in every home: batteries. And although there are a lot of benefits from them, used batteries are a threat to the environment. One battery pollutes 16m2 of land Since May 2021 in the store of the Danish chain JYSK in Ukraine there are special containers for collecting used batteries. Guaranteed recycling of all collected batteries is carried out at the plant GreenWEEE in Romania, which will pay JYSK within the program of environmental responsibility.

According to experts, one battery may cause heavy metal pollution of about 16 square meters of land. For Ukraine, it is especially important: annually the country imports almost 162 million batteries, but only 4% of them are fully recycled.

Each visitor of the network can dispose of up to 50 pieces of batteries in one visit. The collection was launched in cooperation with "Batteries, Surrender," and recycling is paid for by JYSK as part of its environmental responsibility program.

This is not JYSK's first environmental initiative. JYSK runs campaigns to recycle mattresses and collect old pillows for animal shelters, in all variations JYSK offers additional discounts on new products to those who participate in ecoinitiatives.

More and more products made from recycled materials - baskets, garden furniture, rugs, bags, napkins and the like - are appearing in the JYSK assortment.

Also, at the end of January, new packaging for bedding and sheets appeared in our stores. JYSK is now changing from plastic packaging to FSC certified paper packaging, which is another step towards sustainability. In total, the use of the new packaging will eliminate 240,000,000 plastic bags a year. If the bags were all crumpled up and dumped on the floor of JYSK's medium-sized, 950-square-meter store, they would fill the store up to the ceiling.

There are many benefits to replacing the packaging. Eliminating 240,000 tons of packaging means not creating 475 tons of plastic from fossil fuels; in this way JYSK does its part to reduce carbon emissions. The new packaging is made of FSC certified paper (FSC N001715) and is 100% recyclable.

And by the end of 2024 all the cotton, which goes into the textile goods for JYSK, will either be recycled or made in a more sustainable way. More sustainable cotton means that it is either organic or recycled, or goes through the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI).
